About Us
About the HS of Fulton County
I have been volunteering with the Humane Society for
over 4 years now.  Little did I know how much of an
impact it would have on my life.  My first contact with the
Humane Society came several years ago when my son
and I adopted some cats and dogs from the shelter. I
started talking to a friend of mine who volunteered up
there and she suggested I look into volunteering.  I was
naive like most people from this area.  I assumed there
were plenty of volunteers to take care of all the animals
but until I started going into the shelter on a regular
basis I had no idea how much work was involved.  I
didn't realize how much the volunteers are counted on
to get things done or how many things needed to get
done.   Unlike other shelters that may just cover one
town or a small area, ours takes in animals from the
entire county.  I would take  the pictures of the dogs
and cats at the shelter and post them on Petfinder.
Originally I started out taking over while one of the main
volunteers was on vacation.  I stayed on and have been
doing it ever since.   I have spent a lot of late nights
editing pictures and doing write ups for the cats and
dogs that we are trying to help.  I have also helped med
test the dogs and cats that come through our shelter as
well as send out daily lists and rescue emails.  It is a lot
of hard work but worth it when you are able to save a
dog or cat  from being euthanized.  I have been lucky
and have had more help since earlier this summer.
Another volunteer has been taking the pictures and
sending them to me.  It saves me a lot of time and she
has been a Godsend for all the time and love she puts
into her work.

In the Spring of 2007 Fulton County basically had 2
facilities.  One was a small building located near the
water plant in Canton.  It was a tiny place with one small
room at the entrance, a kennel room with small kennels
on each side for the dogs, and an even smaller room in
the back where the cats were located.  No open
windows and cinder block walls made the place rather
stuffy in the summer heat.  I ended up adopting a dog
and 2 cats from the Canton shelter.  I wanted to take
them all home since it was such a sad, miserable place.
Med testing was done outside in the heat on a blanket.
The other facility was located close to the school in
Cuba.  It was a larger facility but still left a lot to be
desired.  The noise level was unbelievable and to even
get to the cats you had to go through the kennels.  The
cats shared a room with the medical testing and bathing
facilities.  Whenever the dogs had to be tested or
bathed they had to be brought into the cat room.
Thanks to Karen Threw, a generous benefactor who
saw the need for a new shelter, Fulton County was able
to make plans to build a new facility.  The Humane
Society and Animal Control decided to work together.
It has taken a lot of time and many hours of work on
part of the Board and all the volunteers but we now
have a Humane Society that we are very proud of.  It is
not perfect but we are always looking for ways to
improve things.  We are always in need of donations,
money, and volunteers so if you can help with any of
that please contact the shelter.  The animals appreciate
everything you do for them.
